It’s so odd to look back on now but when I shot Frank & Margaret’s wedding at the beginning of June, I didn’t think the summer could get any hotter. Oh how we were all wrong!
But we’re not here to talk about that, we’re here to talk about Frank and Margaret’s gorgeous midweek wedding. This wasn’t your usual wedding. They forewent a lot of the “staples” of a traditional wedding. There wasn’t a wedding party, there wasn’t a DJ, there was no bouquet or garter tossed. There wasn’t even a traditional venue.
But what there was, was a whole lot of love.
This wasn’t your usual wedding because Frank is 85 and his bride to be is 75. They decided to forego all the traditional stuff and instead just surround themselves with good food, good drinks and the most important people to them in the whole world. Which meant that apart from a few guests this was entirely a family affair and it was so beautiful to see.
All of Frank’s children and grandchildren were able to fly in, Margaret’s one hundred year old Mom was there, as well as cousins she hadn’t seen in years.
After all the hello’s were said and hugs were given (this was in the wild few weeks we had when everyone was vaccinated and we felt safe) it was time for these two to get married!
The ceremony was officiated by Frank’s son-in-law and was a short but sweet ceremony encompassing all the important parts and skipping the fluff. After the I Do’s we did a round of family photos before I snagged Frank and Margaret away for some couple portraits.
There I learnt the stories of how these two have travelled for 20 years together as part of a friend group before their relationship went from friends to something more. How Margaret was well known and loved within the family before becoming “stepmom” was ever on the horizon.
Dinner was a delicious buffet style selection and a curated selection of wine was poured by Frank’s sommelier grandson. When it came to cake cutting I was expecting a standard affair until Frank decided to be naughty and smoosh cake on Margarets face and then run away before she could get him back. It was absolutely adorable to see.
As the sun was setting and I prepared to make my goodbye I quickly grabbed Frank and Margaret one last time for some sunset photos. It may not have been a traditional wedding but I’m a sucker for a good sunset and they humored me.
On paper, society would say these two lovebirds are “past it” and “old” but all I saw the entire day was a couple ridiculously in love, no different from any other wedding I’ve captured and no less deserving of being splashed across wedding magazines. Hopefully that can come to be sooner rather than later.
